The Triman

Politicians have been working for years to establish better environmental protection and responsible use of household packaging but especially in the Europe. The French Environmental Code, Art. L541-9-3 states that how products must be labeled with regard to the correct method of disposal. In this article, you will find out what you have to pay attention regarding to Triman logo.

What Is The Triman Logo?

The Triman logo was introduced in 2015 by Decree No. 2014-1577. The logo informs end consumers that packaging can be recycled and its components must be disposed separately. Its purpose is to inform consumers and help them choose the right disposal methods.

Which Products Does It Apply To?

The Triman logo generally applies to products that are subject to registration in France. These include printed paper products, packaging, clothing and footwear, electrical appliances, batteries etc. The labeling requirement only applies to goods and their packaging that are manufactured for use in private households. Hence, usage on products explicitly designed for professional purposes is not permitted.

Silhuette of The Triman Logo

The Triman emblem features a pictorial representation of an individual with an extended arm, from which three bold arrows extend in varying directions. The silhuette represents the environmentally conscious consumer who separately disposes the product or packaging. Encircling it is a slender arrow, directing from the uppermost to the lowermost of the three thick arrows, symbolizing the repurposing and transformation of resources. It thus represents recycling.

Sorting Instructions

Starting from January 1, 2022, it is a requirement to directly affix the Triman logo and ‘info tri’ to the product or packaging. When doing this, you must adhere to a minimum size of six millimeters and follow the specified black and white or colored design. If this is not feasible, you must also include the logo in the accompanying product instructions or documents.

Deadlines

Until March 9, 2023, you are allowed to continue selling packaging manufactured before September 9, 2022, which is not yet labeled in accordance with the law. However, as of March 9, 2023, all transition periods will expire, and your products must adhere to the labeling regulations.

Fines and Sanctions

If you do not follow the legal requirements, this may have consequences for you. Article L171-8 and Article L173-1 of the Environmental Code provide for warnings by authorities if you violate your obligations. As a result, penalties of up to 100,000 EUR or a maximum of two years of imprisonment can be enforced.
